The state was established by three great lamas in 1642, with Phuntsong Namgyal as the ruler or Chogyal. It remained independent for 500 years and the region was dominated by the Buddhists. In the 18th century, the Gorkha army invaded the Sikkim, Kumaon, and Garhwal region. The Chogyals had to then seek asylum in Tibet. In 1814, the Britishers had a war with the Gorkha army, where Nepal lost badly and signed The Treaty of Sugauli. The Gorkha army was powerful but upon being defeated, had to return parts of Sikkim, Kumaon, and Garhwal. In 1817 Nepal and Britain signed a treaty and Sikkim became subjugated to British Jurisdiction. After's India's independence, it was not quite clear what would happen between India's and Sikkim's relationship; whether it would be an Indian state or turn into an external protectorate. In 1950 a treaty was signed between India and Sikkim by Sardar Patel and B.N Rao as the head. According to the treaty, Sikkim was given freedom but India was responsible for its security. In 1975, the Indian Army took over the city of Gangtok, a referendum was held that led to the deposition of the monarchy and Sikkim joining India as its 22nd state with special provisions promised by the constitution.
