While he rose to fame throughout the 70's and the 80's with his show The PTL Club, he began misappropriating funds meant for religious work and spending it on whatever else he felt like. This likely would not have been discovered, but in 1987 he was accused of drugging and assaulting a 21 year-old church secretary named Jessica Hahn. Bakker was outed for attempting to bribe Hahn to keep her from going public, but he was exposed anyway. The assault was never proven, but his massive amount of fraud was. He spent several years in jail, but then returned to televangelism in 2003. This time fear mongering that the apocalypse was imminent and encouraging people to buy survival food from him for hundreds or thousands of dollars. He's still doing this today.
