Brevity is a noun that means concise and exact use of words in writing or speech. For example, At only 272 words long, and taking only two minutes to speakâAbraham Lincolnâs Gettysburg Address is famous for its brevity. And William Shakespeare said âbrevity is the soul of wit.â This means that the key to wit is being brief with our words Writers often speak about the importance of brevity. George Orwell said âIf it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.â And Freidrich Nietsche said âIt is my ambition to say in ten sentences what others say in a whole book.â Both of these writers point out the importance of being brief, simple and to the point. They point out the need for brevity. The cover of this book demonstrates the importance of omitting needless words. It shows that there is power in saying more with less. In fact, English teachers are secret info famous for marking up essays and papers because the writer used too many words. Here are a few examples of brevity used in a sentence. Because my brother is not known for his brevity, he is rarely asked to speak at formal events. He will talk for hours if you let him. And As the couple married after knowing each other only six days, the brevity of their marriage did not surprise anyone. And I love that her speeches donât last too long. She speaks with such perfect brevity. Now that you know what brevity means, here is your task. Take the following paragraph and reduce it to 20 words.
