Shlomo Avineri is Professor of Political Science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a former Director-General of Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is the author of many books, among them The Making of Modern Zionism: The Intellectual Origins of the Jewish State (Basic Books, 1981).
