Fathom Highlight: Refugees – Jewish and Palestinian / 01 December / 2014

On Saturday, the United Nations marked the ‘International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People’ and on Sunday Israel marked its first national day of commemoration for Jewish refugees from Arab lands and Iran.

In this week’s Fathom Highlight, we offer two articles.

Former MK Dr Einat Wilf and Shany Mor, a former Director for Foreign Policy on Israel’s National Security Council, argue that the world must choose which Palestine it is in solidarity with: liberation Palestine (a state alongside and in peace with Israel) or elimination Palestine, (a state at war and seeking to replace Israel).

Lyn Julius of Harif, the association of Jews from the Middle East and North Africa, argues that Jews suffered under Arab rule to the point where they could see no future in their ancient, indigenous communities. Israel, for all its faults, is the place where they regained dignity, freedom, rights and a sense of personal security.

Our voice for this week is of Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin and 11-year-old George Amira. In October this year the two featured in this video, aimed at tackling violence, hostility, bullying, and racism in Israel.

Our Image of the Week is of world-renowned international cantors, amongst them Simon Cohen, Bension Miller and Reuven Pinsky, performing a mix of opera and Israeli classical tunes, at the Jerusalem theatre on 27 November 2014. Photo by Yaakov Naumi/Flash90.
