Settlement construction is once again a controversial topic within Israel and among the international community. The new issue of Fathom showcases two contrasting voices on the topic. Fathom Assistant Editor Lorin Bell-Cross interviewed Dani Dayan, the former Chairman and current Chief Foreign Envoy of the Yesha Council, an umbrella organisation which represents Jewish settlements in the West Bank. Fathom Editor Alan Johnson spoke to Lior Amihai, head of Peace Now’s Settlement Watch project, which monitors the building of settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
The weekly Fathom highlight has two new features.
‘Voice of the week’ features Ruth Gavison and Stuart Eizenstat speaking about ‘What does it mean for Israel to identify as “both Jewish and democratic”’? at The Washington Institute on 31 October 2014.
‘Image of the week’ is former President Shimon Peres speaking during a rally in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv, marking 19 years since the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Photo by Tomer Neuberg/Flash90
