This week’s highlight is a three-part symposium on the security dimension in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Colonel Kris Bauman and Ilan Goldenberg provide a starting point for further discussion and refinement in order to resolve the security component of final-status discussions between Israelis and Palestinians. In response is seasoned negotiator and security expert Michael Herzog, who recommends deeper involvement by regional players in security arrangements in order to solve the complex and interconnected issues of Israel’s security requirements. Last but certainly not least is Gershon Hacohen writing against conventionally-held wisdom of the efficacy of barriers in security, instead arguing that boots on the ground remains Israel’s best option for long-term security.
Our voice of the week is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu receiving the Herman Kahn Award at the Hudson Institute. Moderated by Roger Hertog, noted philanthropist and chairman of the Tikvah Fund, Netanyahu discusses Israel and its social, economic and foreign relations future in a region inflicted with war.
Our image of the week is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shaking the hands of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas during the state funeral of the late Israeli President Shimon Peres, held at Mt Herzl, in Jerusalem on 30 September 2016.
